You pay to end discomfort 

Fast 

Even when you didn’t cause the problem

Let people know you’re a high roller 

By silently accepting the emotional bill

Take on the shame and negativity 

That actually belongs to both of you

Or probably just them

You get relief and a sense of control 

I fixed it

If you get assaulted by a complete stranger

And the first thing you say is sorry

When they knock you down

You were in the way

Your friend ostracizes you?

You should apologize for being socially inconvenient

A man says he’ll drive you home 

And instead he drives you to Long Island?

It’s your fault for not living on Long Island

Saying sorry says

Let me carry the discomfort 

So we don’t have to look at what you did

You could always choose to stop saying sorry later

But you’re gonna need to make new friends

And your old friends will need to find

A new designated shock absorber
