LATE WINTER

all this effort resisting the time spiral
while love grows like moss
in the shadows
waiting for the earth to move
stars to come around
forgetting what can be wiped away
with a soft rag, an impulse
meanwhile we circle back
remembering, imagining
retracing our steps to figure out why
how much longer
answers retreating like the exact time of sunset
every day a little longer than the last

YOU'RE MY ONLY FRIEND

a role I’m familiar with
a responsibility I take seriously
I’m part of the rehab
I’m running this place
I’m the definition of trustworthy
I can executive function for at least 4 people, probably more
the depressed blossom in my care
I leave the campsite better than I found it
or I take the campsite with me and we go on adventures
I can carry a lot

THERMOMETER

Our rooms right next to each other
Mostly soundproof unless the laughter is loud
My thermostat controls your room too
So you’re always asking me to turn it down
It feels like you have a dial for my heart
Turning it up and down day to day
The wall between us falling down, then back up
Then thinner then thicker
Now I hear you now I don’t
If I place my hand on it I start trembling
Not from the cold
 Though a heating pad helps

HOW THE WORLD WORKS

Living abroad, medical school,
delivering babies, her own & others’,
God knows what else she’s done
yet she claims it’s the MBA teaching her
how the world works.
 Follow the money, I guess.

Except some of us would do anything
 to be loved
or live forever.
Even people with money sometimes throw
it all away for a touch or kiss
then spend the rest of their lives covering it up.
Do they teach that in business school too?

BLOOD MESSAGE

I’m your blood
I come from your mother, through your placenta, your umbilical cord
I’m coming out of your knees when you fall
I’m mixing with dirt on the sidewalk
I’m in the empty socket in your mouth where a tooth used to be
I’m the first brown streak in your underwear
I’m filling your diva cup, getting dumped into a hole high in the Sierra Nevadas
I’m pulsing in your brain, giving you a headache
I’m leaving tracks through the house from a stubbed toe
I’m gushing out after your baby
I’m staining your mattress
You’re washing me down the drain

I WISH I HAD MORE SISTERS

Sisters are born not made
I don’t care how hard you try.
Are you my sister?
 No I’m your friend
Are you my sister?
 No I’m your aunt
Are you my sister?
No I’m your cousin
Are you my sister?
No I’m your daughter
Are you my sister?
No I’m the author of this book
Are you my sister?
No I’m singing this song

RIDDLE ME THIS

let me down gently
why don’t you push me against the wall
pierce me with the thinnest needle you have
I’ll make a desperate whine as I deflate
knit my legs together
darn my heart closed
fold me into a neat square and slide
me into your drawer
for safekeeping
I’ll hug your curves
whenever you choose me

DONATING BLOOD

Whoever gets my blood is lucky
They won’t know me and I won’t know them but
 We’ll be connected somehow
And I like that
I’m like those fertility doctors who secretly mix in their own semen
I want immortality
 Or something that badly

BIRTHDAY PARTY

If I love you
I will show up early and leave late
Bring tequila, grapefruits, limes, a bag of ice
Dance and sing and smile til everything hurts
In exchange all I want is
 the music inside me
Turn it all the way up
As I take the speaker into my hands
Hold the beat to my ribs, my diaphragm,
Vibrating the pain
Strumming my pelvic floor
holding me together
A stroke of luck to be here

18 years without you now

18 years without you now
My grief could vote
my grief could get drafted
It could graduate high school
Valedictorian of its class
Walk across the stage in cap & gown
and accept a diploma for all its hard work
My grief is ready to launch
Live in a dorm
Fall in love
Drink too much at a party
Share a twin bed with a tall boyfriend
Cry through an hour of therapy
Stay up all night writing a paper
Then fly home in the morning
with a 50 pound suitcase
Get picked up by a mom in a wig
in a new car that already reeks of cigarettes
My grief is so mad & sad
It doesn’t even want to hug her

What’s going on over there? / who’s on with you? / who’s on with me? / how’d they treat you? / I didn’t expect that baby to be so big / my favorite patient has my least favorite nurse / you’re not like most doctors / I’ll take that as a compliment / it was meant that way / I like old fashioneds / I am very open minded. Also nosy though / I’m going to bed / who’s on with me Friday? / please let it be you!!! / wait until you hear the story / I can’t wait for our next stitch n bitch / are you judging them because I am / you get it / you get it too / I’m tired and grumpy / I could do the communal living thing / I'm intrigued by your high school / my mom is very women's rights not catholic / I love nuns / did you make it home?? / I love your sweatshirt / my shoulder hurts / my jaw hurts / are you and your mom matching now? / that’s adorable / aren’t kids the best? / I hope I live long enough to go on trips with my adult kids / you will / 2nd grade is a bitch / lord help me / I’m off at 8, god willing / I’m on my way / I’m at the bar / are you boozing? / take me snowshoeing sometime! / the best compliment I got all year was when you said I’m not like most doctors / you know more than I do / are you sure you don’t have ADHD? / are you calling me highly intelligent? / I want to read it! / how’s it going over there? / how about tomorrow night? / you had better be drinking! / pizza? / be right there / coffee? / yes please / I’ll buy you a negroni / can I ask you a super embarrassing question / I wish we had gone out together

What is medicine?

It can sting your throat

It could burn a hole in your stomach if you’re not careful

Radioactive beads can be medicine

Not the kind to make a necklace, the kind shipped around the world for bodies

Killing cells can be a cure

Erotic energy, directed in or out

An intellectual connection even

A book or just a short poem

Plants definitely, if you know what to look for

Someone who really sees you, someone who tells you stories

Pickles, peanut butter, salami or sourdough

The way a message lights up your life, gets your heart beating harder

There are different doses for medicine - baby, child, adult

Some of it is legal, some could put you behind bars

some can be foraged from the neighbors yard

Laughter is best, followed by a good cry

Singing in the car with or without crying works too

A vibrator usually gets the job done

Sometimes you need permission and sometimes you can choose your own medicine

It depends on the country, the government who you may or may not agree with

Sometimes it takes weeks to work, sometimes it’s a matter of seconds

Sometimes blood is the medicine, fortified from another body

Sometimes you take it everyday for the rest of your life

Sometimes a few years, or a few days, or you poke yourself

Everytime you eat, there’s so many ways to take it

Maybe it’s a secret you carry with you

Maybe it’s finally telling the truth to yourself

Or a subjective honesty

The realization that anything can be medicine if you let it

ANNIVERSARY POEM

you're as close as I’ll get to having a brother, but stranger,
less defined, more chosen - a cousin.

It would have been easy not to know each other,

easier still not to let a weird love develop.

Two people with very little in common,

a decade between us, different coasts,

your mother the oldest of 6, my mother the youngest, 10 years between them.

What did you see in me?

An awkward anxious straight A student, but I was down to adventure and you a perfect tour guide.

You with your big life, your big laugh, traveling with the band, partying all night, driving fast, pointing out landmarks and their history.

You remembered everything, you remembered everyone, you remembered why it mattered.

Picking me up and taking me to dinner, to a museum, to tour colleges, to our grandmother.

What we loved: eating, drinking, communism, music, art, the beach, our family.

We are doing our best without you.

We are calling each other.

We are sharing memories.

You would be proud of us, sometimes.

But we don’t know how to love each other the way you did.

I wish you could have felt the force of your own love.

THE BRIDGE

crossing the bridge
over the lake of me
white caps on one side
stillness on the other

the eagle in me always perched

and watching

my love rains down like an

atmospheric river

washing out roads, levees,

whole homes floating away

GO NOW the orders say

STAY SAFE says the other side

my hands gripping

the wheel in me to keep

from blowing away

QUICKENING

Something in me moves.

It’s not alive, though,

more like a sliding door

pushed aside smoothly in its track

not making a sound.

All of a sudden a new hallway

appears where there was

once a wall.

My chest flushes,

looking.

After Lucille Clifton

I am limping into a new year
the old years piled up at my back
everyone I’ve lost pulling at my feet
each step heavy and slow
I know this will be the year
I break some hearts
including my own
I was six when I promised
to always be good and I’ve kept
my promise
I have years of evidence
it will be hard to let go
and I beg what I love and
I leave to forgive me
