Animals Observed

Distant cats

Furtive squirrels

Beleaguered rats

Minuscule ants

That’s about it

Except for the roach

That plummeted 

From behind the wall covering

At the zen center

Like a weighted mistake

So fast I doubted myself

But then quietly a man

In socks got a ceramic mug 

And another man

Crept near 

All while a seated man 

Spoke of his concerns 

Or gratitude or both 

Later maybe they’d mention the incident

Or maybe they wouldn’t
