“Happy new year! Me no die, me no die o!”
This is one way my Liberian people ring in new years.
Cancer could have killed me in 2025 but she birthed me instead.
Nearly exactly 9 months to the day from when she took the sacrifice of my breasts to my emergence from her birth canal.
I cry many rivers about it all—
Rivers of gratitude
Rivers that heal from the shock of it
Rivers that carry the losses
Rivers that carry the bounties
Rivers that carry me from one self to the next
Rivers that speak of life not casually taken for granted or complained about
Rivers of optimism and the breaking of new days
It’s a new year and I am still here. A small miracle born of divine love.
Happy New Year! Me no die o!
rivers that heal from the shock of it
